This will be a celebration of the Roland TR-808 drum machine and its continuing impact on music. Despite being released 40 years ago, sounds of the TR-808 can still be heard in music today. The most obvious of these is the 808 kick, which on the original drum machine could be programmed to have a long ‘decay’, meaning the sound of the kick takes longer to fade. This effect was designed to emulate the decay of a real kick drum, however, because of its deep and ‘sizzly’ sound, producers quickly began to use it experimentally in their music. …
